Carlos Wildon "Red" Smart, age 85, of Pierce County died Wednesday afternoon March 23rd, 2016 at Satilla Hospice in Waycross after a short illness. He was a native of Pierce County, son of the late Wright Smart and Mattie Crews Smart and was also preceded in death by his first wife Shelby Jean Barber Smart, three sons Timothy Smart and 2 infants, a brother Tracy (Sam) Smart, a sister Joyce Smart Garret, two brother-in-laws Rudolph Garret and Burton Oliver. Red was an avid foxhunter. A member of the Pierce County Fox's Hunters Club and was a veteran of the Korean War while serving in the U S Army.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years Shirley Mercer Long Smart of Pierce County, a step-son Roy L Long, Sr. (Debbie) of Douglas, a brother Larry Smart (Anneyse) of Alma, a sister Joyce Smart Oliver of Gainesville, FL. Also five step grand children and twenty step great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews survive.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 25th at 11:00 o'clock from the chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Loren Bryant and Rev. Sam Quick officiating. Interment will follow in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery in Pierce County. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Friday morning between 10:00 A M and 11:00 o'clock.
Active pallbearers will be Nicky Jarrard, Brent Godshalk, Jimmy Hill, Bill McCrea, Jason Long and Roy Long, Jr. Honorary will be the Pierce County Fox Hunters Club, Charles Peacock, J Walter Mattox, Don and Helen Rowell, Eddie Smart, Nadine Taylor, Earnest Barber, Carol Thrift and Shellie Tanner.
