Obituary

On Tuesday, October 13, 2020 Evelyn Dorminey Solomon went Home to be with Jesus after an extended illness. She was born at home in Coffee County on August 25, 1923 to John Bradford Dorminey and Lista Vickers Dorminey and was the youngest of their 13 children. She was preceded in death by her husband, M. J. "Doc" Solomon, her parents and her brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Evelyn was a faithful member of the Alma First Baptist Church for more than 75 years. She loved her church family. She taught Sunday School for children for more than 40 years and taught adult classes as well. She served on many committees and was most happy when she was baking and sewing for others – all to honor her love of Christ. She was a prayer warrior for her church leaders and family.  She was a recent member and former teacher of the Joy Sunday School Class and active member of Young at Heart.

She loved people and serving others was her passion. She loved cooking and was usually one of the first to be ready to take meals to those in need. Over the years, she drove many to doctors' appointments locally and as far away as Savannah and Jacksonville. She selflessly served the community and was chosen as Citizen of the Year in 1990 and in 2018 she received the Exchange Club's Book of Golden Deeds award.  Both were acknowledgements of the many years of tireless work she dedicated to supporting and caring for others.

Mrs. Evelyn was a caterer and made wedding cakes for a whole generation of Bacon County residents as well as many in surrounding counties, before retiring from that profession. She also made countless birthday and anniversary cakes prior to retirement and likely made as many to support the church, local causes or to show someone that they were in her thoughts and prayers.

She volunteered as a Pink Lady at the Bacon County Hospital for almost 20 years and also enjoyed visiting with patients in the nursing home.

Proud to be called survivors of this great lady, include three children, J. Bertram "Butch" Solomon (Lanita) of Knoxville, TN., Bobby Solomon (Regina) of Fernandina Beach, FL. and Janet Solomon Calhoun (Charlie) of Powder Springs, GA. and four grandchildren, Jessie Solomon Fox (Daniel), Lisa Nix (Jon), Bert Solomon (Tara) and Caleb Calhoun as well as 5 great grandchildren.

A private family graveside service will be held for Mrs. Solomon in Coffee County with the Reverend Wayne Woods officiating. The family hopes to have a memorial to honor her life with the extended family and the community in the future.

In lieu of flowers, she desired that donations be made to the deaf ministry work (Signs of Love) of her granddaughter. Donations can be made digitally at: shorturl.at/girB7 or mailed to:  Missions Door, 750 W. Hampden Ave, Ste 518 Englewood, CO 80110 please put in memo: "Ministry of Jessie Fox".
