Obituary

Henry Samuel Bishop, II, son of Bernard Alton and Mary Elizabeth Madden Bishop, passed away at the age of 73 on Monday, March 28, 2016 peacefully in his home on St. Simons Island, Georgia. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law Betty Ann Bishop Stroud and Tom Stroud. He is survived by his twin brother, James Alexander Bishop (Mary) of Sea Island, Georgia, his children, Henry Samuel Bishop, III (Benham) of Atlantic Beach, Florida, Peggy Bishop Cohen (Michael) of Albany, Georgia and Mary Madden Bishop of St. Simons Island, Georgia, his grandchildren, Henry Samuel Bishop IV, Benjamin Alton Bishop, Jack Everett Bishop, John Rufus Cole IV, Virginia Madden Cole, Michael Parks Cohen and Frances Carlisle Cohen, six nieces and nephews and his lifelong caregivers Angela Cohen and Billy Akers. Henry was born and raised in Alma, Georgia. He graduated from Bacon County High School in 1960 and the University of Georgia in 1964 where he was a member of the Gridiron Secret Society, the University of Georgia football team and serving as President of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Following his graduation, Henry returned to Alma where he briefly worked with his father in the family's funeral business prior to beginning his 30 year banking career including starting First Federal of Alma and founding First Georgia Savings Bank, the first stock chartered savings bank in the United States. He was a member of Saint Simons Community Church.

Henry was dedicated to his home State of Georgia including being the Mayor of Alma from 1968 – 1972 making him at the time the youngest Mayor in the State of Georgia. He was a member of the inaugural class of leadership Georgia, the Chairman of the Georgia Ports Authority, a Member of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Board, the President of the Georgia Municipal Association and a Founding Member of Ocean Forest Club on Sea Island. Among his many accomplishments Henry was most proud of attaining the rank of Eagle Scout and was the recipient of the coveted Silver Beaver award and a recipient of the Golden Eagle Honor for his contributions to scouting. Henry was a true gentleman and man of great faith who loved his family, his church, playing golf at Ocean Forest, and spending time hunting, fishing and laughing with his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a devoted and loyal father, grandfather, friend and twin brother.

A private family graveside will be held Wednesday morning, March 30th at 10:00 AM at Christ Church Cemetery on St. Simons Island. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 30 at Saint Simons Community Church with Dr. Ben Haggood and Rev. David Yarbrough officiating. A celebration of Henry's life will follow the service where the family will receive friends.
