James, C. 'Sonny" Smith, age 83, of Alma passed away suddenly at his residence on Saturday, December 26, 2020. He was born in Ware County on September 28, 1937 to James R. Smith, Sr. and Edna Pearl Taylor Smith. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Klara Fuchs Smith, children, James Larry Smith and Donna Sturgill, brothers Lewis Smith and Grooms Smith.

Mr. Smith was retired from the United States Army after 20 years of service.

Survivors include eight grandchildren; Christine Whitaker of Bath, SC., Brandon and Brittany Sturgill of Douglas, GA., Monica Wooten of Broxton, GA., Stephanie Smith of Hazlehurst, GA., Kelzey Smith of Augusta, GA., Brianna Smith of TX. and Danielle Wasden of Alma, GA., three sisters, Barbara Ann Grantham (Junior) of Brunswick, GA., Lynette Spell (Redius) of Alma, GA. and Lawanda Boatright (Van) of Blackshear, GA.; also 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

A graveside will be held Saturday, January 2, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Elizabeth Chapel Church Cemetery with Military Honors.

Mask and social distancing will be required.

Crosby Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
