Major George Lawton Johnson, Georgia State Patrol (retired) age 82, of Alma passed away on Sunday morning June 26, 2022 at the Bacon County Hospital after a short illness.
He was born May 25, 1940, and raised in Alma, in the Pine Level Community to the late James Willie Lee "Bill" Johnson and Dolora Rigdon Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife Linda Patricia "Pat" Moore Johnson; granddaughter, Holli Rochelle Lee and two sisters, Willene Carter and Zennith Brewer.
He served in the Georgia Army National Guard, was a retired Major from the Georgia State Patrol and was a member of Pine Level Free Will Baptist Church and served as a trustee. He served as Past President of the Alma Exchange Club and was a member of the Bacon County Masonic Lodge # 56 and Peace Officers Associates of Georgia.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Jane Lee Johnson of Alma; children, Lori and Gene Squires and Lynn and Bill Bryant of Alma, Lynda Johnson and M.J. Stephens of Tyrone, Georgia, Jessica and Brent Johnson of Alma, Thomas and Rebecca Taylor of Annapolis, MD, special children Randy and Sonja Martin of Alma. Brother, James Chester Johnson of Middleburg, Florida; two sisters, Melissa Conner of Alma and Elizabeth Mattson of Savannah, Georgia. Grandchildren are Alex Squires, Trey Cason, Jon and Blake Cason, Erin Bryant, Matthew Bryant, Sarah Jane Johnson, Jake Johnson, Kate Johnson, Morgan Taylor and Jadon Taylor. Great-grandchildren are Hazel Mae Cason and Warren Lawton Cason.
Visitation will be held at Crosby Funeral Home Tuesday, July 5 th from 6 to 9 PM.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 6 th at 10:00 AM at Pine Level Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Eric Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Georgia State Patrol Honor Guard will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary escorts will be retired and current law enforcement, the Bacon County Masonic Lodge #56, Dr. Harrison C. Carter & Staff, Glenda Morgan, Sandra Hendrickson, Mary Turner and staff of the Bacon County Hospital .
The family ask that the public park behind the church the day of the service as the front parking area will be reserved for retired and current law enforcement.
