On July 22, 2024, Virginia Tanner Murphy was called home just days shy of her 92nd birthday. Virginia was an independent thinker with a heart of gold and immense love for her family. She was known for her vibrant red hair, outstanding fashion sense (the more glitter the better!), and sleuthing abilities as the Bacon County High School secretary for 29 years. Before her time as a school secretary, she retired from FNB South after 30 years of service. In her eighties she loved dancing every Friday night with the Douglas Singles Club until she broke her hips dancing in her Jessica Simpson platform shoes. Virginia's hobbies were spending time shopping with her daughter and granddaughter and cheering on Coach K and her Duke Blue Devils.

Mrs. Murphy was born in Coffee County to her parents Arthur and Estelle Tanner. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband and former Bacon County Schools Superintendent, Edison Murphy. Virginia greatly loved and cared for her family to which, if she could, she would have given the moon. Her memory lives on through her daughter Sharris (Phil) Murphy, grandson Phillip Murphy, granddaughter Merrick Murphy(Drew) Tillery, the students she caught skipping class, and countless students that she didn't.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 25th at 2 PM, at the Chapel of Crosby Funeral Home with Rev. Walt Deloach officiating. The family will receive friends, starting at 1 PM. Active pallbearers include Phillip Murphy Jr., Drew Tillary, Billy Murphy, Woody Murphy, Kenny Murphy, and Robert Sapp. Honorary escort include Alaric Noble, the staff of Lakeside Senior Center, and the Douglas Singles Club. Interment will be in Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
